Overview

The Great Lakes Road Trip follows the edge of the largest freshwater system on Earth, connecting three national parks shaped by water, time, and human history. From the remote solitude of Isle Royale National Park to the wind-sculpted dunes of Indiana Dunes National Park, and finally the revitalized landscapes of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, this trip offers a quieter, more reflective take on the American national parks experience.

Here, wilderness isn’t always defined by towering peaks or vast deserts. It’s found in island shorelines only reachable by boat, in living dunes that migrate with the wind, and along rivers once written off as lost to industry. Each park tells a different chapter of the Great Lakes story—glacial origins, ecological diversity, and the long process of recovery and renewal.

Together, these landscapes create a road trip rooted in contrast and connection. It’s a journey well-suited for travelers who appreciate slower exploration, layered history, and the subtle beauty of places shaped as much by resilience as by nature itself.

Suggested Route

The Great Lakes Road Trip unfolds best from east to west, beginning in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, where restored river corridors, towpaths, and waterfalls offer an accessible introduction to the Great Lakes region. From there, the route follows Lake Erie and Lake Michigan to Indiana Dunes National Park, blending shoreline hikes, migrating dunes, and expansive freshwater views. The journey culminates at Isle Royale National Park, where ferry access and island solitude provide a fitting conclusion—ending the trip in one of the most remote and immersive landscapes in the national park system.

Sample Itinerary

 Days 1-2
Cuyahoga Valley

Begin the Great Lakes Road Trip in Northeast Ohio, where forested hills, historic canals, and a recovering river landscape define the park. This opening leg eases you into the journey with accessible trails, cultural history, and a strong sense of place shaped by both industry and restoration.

Highlights

  • Bike or walk the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
  • Visit Brandywine Falls, one of the park’s most iconic and accessible waterfalls
  • Explore historic canal towns and trailheads scattered throughout the valley
  • Spot wildlife in wetlands and meadows reclaimed through decades of conservation
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Indiana Dunes National Park

 Days 3-4
Indiana Dunes

Travel west along the southern edge of Lake Michigan to a landscape defined by motion—wind, water, and sand constantly reshaping the shoreline. This leg balances active exploration with open beaches and wide freshwater views.

Highlights

  • Hike dune trails offering sweeping views of Lake Michigan
  • Walk long stretches of beach at sunrise or sunset
  • Explore wetlands and oak savannas that support exceptional biodiversity

 Days 5-7
Isle Royale

The journey concludes in one of the most remote national parks in the lower 48, accessible only by boat or seaplane. This final leg trades roads and crowds for silence, wilderness, and deep immersion.

Highlights

  • Ferry or seaplane travel across Lake Superior to the island
  • Day hikes or multi-day backpacking routes through boreal forest and ridgelines
  • Kayaking along rocky shorelines and sheltered coves
  • Wildlife watching and stargazing in a roadless, light-pollution-free environment

Planning Notes

time-icon

Best Time to Visit

Late June through early September offers the best conditions across all three parks. Isle Royale’s ferry season is limited to summer months, while Indiana Dunes and Cuyahoga Valley are most comfortable before fall crowds and cooler lake weather arrive.

pass-icon

Park Passes & Reservations

An America the Beautiful Annual Pass covers entrance fees for all three parks. Isle Royale requires advance ferry or seaplane reservations, which should be booked well ahead during peak summer weeks.

drive-icon

Driving Distances & Expectations

This trip involves moderate-to-long driving days, especially when transitioning from Indiana to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Plan for scenic routes rather than fastest highways, and allow extra buffer time when coordinating ferry schedules to Isle Royale.

lodging-icon

Lodging Strategy

Stay outside park boundaries near Cuyahoga Valley and Indiana Dunes for flexibility and dining options. For Isle Royale, lodging is limited to campsites and a single lodge, making early planning essential for overnight stays.

weather-icon

Weather & Elevation Awareness

Expect variable weather influenced by the Great Lakes, including sudden temperature shifts, wind, and rain. Even in summer, nights near Lake Superior can be cold, so layered clothing is important throughout the trip.

Crowd Management Tips

Visit Indiana Dunes early in the morning or on weekdays to avoid peak crowds. Cuyahoga Valley spreads visitors well across trailheads, while Isle Royale naturally limits crowding due to access restrictions.

food-icon

Food & Supplies

Stock up on groceries and fuel before reaching Isle Royale, as options on the island are extremely limited. Indiana Dunes and Cuyahoga Valley offer easy access to nearby towns for meals and resupply.

Cell Service & Navigation

Cell service is reliable near Indiana Dunes and parts of Cuyahoga Valley but becomes inconsistent in forested areas. Isle Royale has little to no service, making offline maps and navigation tools essential.

Wildlife Awareness & Safety

Black bears, moose, and smaller mammals inhabit Isle Royale, requiring proper food storage and awareness. In all parks, be mindful of ticks, changing weather, and shoreline conditions along the Great Lakes.
