For easy water access, stay at the riverside East Portal Campground in the neighboring Curecanti National Recreation Area. Shaded by tall box elders—an incredible perk during the summer heat—it sits beside the historic Gunnison Tunnel, the early engineering feat that carried canyon water to nearby farming communities.
