Indiana Dunes National Park

Along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes preserves a rare meeting of shifting sand, rich biodiversity, and a legacy shaped by Indigenous peoples, science, and conservation.

History of the Park

For thousands of years, the lands now protected as Indiana Dunes National Park were used by Indigenous peoples, including the Miami and Potawatomi. These groups relied on the dunes, forests, and wetlands for hunting, fishing, plant gathering, and seasonal travel, using the Lake Michigan shoreline as both a resource and a transportation corridor.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, industrial growth in northern Indiana threatened the dunes through steel production, shipping, and development. At the same time, scientists and naturalists began studying the area’s unique dune succession ecosystems, making the region internationally important for ecological research. After decades of grassroots advocacy, the area was protected as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966. In 2019, it was redesignated as a national park, formally recognizing its ecological and historical significance.

Park Culture

Learn about the local culture surrounding this park.

Indiana Dunes is culturally defined by contrast—wild landscapes set against one of the most industrialized shorelines in the Great Lakes. This tension helped shape one of the strongest conservation movements in the Midwest, blending science, public advocacy, and local pride. The dunes became a symbol of coexistence between nature and human industry rather than replacement.

Today, the park reflects a living cultural mosaic of nearby communities, researchers, and visitors who value access to wild spaces close to urban centers. From quiet wetlands and towering dunes to busy beaches along Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes tells a story of resilience—both ecological and human—preserved through generations of care and commitment.
